Fear of the cold unknown and SERENITY, peacefulness, peace of mind… Then, I hear her calling me… She is there… She sees me… She calls me… I cannot see her… I can talk to her… I tell her to go away, I warn her, I am protecting her…

Why are you here? You have to leave… You must go! The promotional video for "A Forest" was the band's first. It was created by David Hiller, who mixed footage from the band's 24 April 1980 debut appearance on BBC's Top of the Pops programme with a forest montage. Smith said that the group "came across looking very morose and disinterested" in the video because that is how they felt at the time; he "hated" Top of the Pops as he was "really anti-pop" during this period. He recalled that he had been in pain at the time of the shoot as he had broken his thumb trying to change a tyre a few days previously.

Robert Smith told Rolling Stone in 2004:

With “A Forest” I wanted to do something that was really atmospheric, and it has a fantastic sound. Chris Parry said, “If you make this sound radio friendly, you’ve got a big hit on your hands.” I said, “But this is how it sounds. It’s the sound I’ve got in my head. It doesn’t matter about whether it’s radio friendly.

He also shared with Record Collector that same year:

When we did “Jumping Someone Else’s Train”, Polydor (Records), who distribute Fiction (Records) in England, said, “This is it, a Top 10 single!” and it went nowhere. They also said they couldn’t really hear “A Forest” as a single, and it was a hit. Polydor doesn’t understand us.
